Orbital Disease

What is Orbital Disease?
The orbit, commonly referred to as the eye socket, is a small space which contains the eye, the muscles that move the eye, the lacrimal (tear) gland, and numerous blood vessels and nerves. We commonly refer to any of these issues involving this area as an orbital disease.

An orbital disease can have many causes, but primarily they fit into one of three areas: infections, inflammations, or tumors.

Regardless of the cause, the eyeball, its normal movement, and the optic nerve are all at risk when an orbital disease is present. Symptoms at onset may include a sudden onset of pain in the orbital area, swelling of the eyelids, dilation of the blood vessels in the eye resulting in red eyes and vision issues such as double vision or limited vision. In severe cases, patients may lose vision.
